Opening of Chorotega Ceramic Ecomuseum in San Vicente de Nicoya

The community of Chorotega opened the Ceramic Ecomuseum in San Vicente, Nicoya on May 26th 2007.

It is managed by the Asociación Ecomuseo de la Artesanía Chorotega de San Vicente de Nicoya, headed by Maribel Sánchez. Exhibitions explore photographs of elder community artisans, and talks are offered on community history, as well as demonstrations of pottery making, tours to clay extraction sites and visits to sites of sacred and natural beauty. The Chorotega area is renowned for the production of handmade ceramics, and the ecomusuem serves to safeguard and promote these indigenous pre-Columbian pottery techniques. The interpretation for the exhibition was implemented with the advice of the National Museum of Costa Rica’s Regional and Community Museum Programme, using methodologies of the Network of Community Museums of America.
